WestWater Research Intermountain Regional Director Brett Bovee organized a panel discussion on compensated demand management programs in the Western U.S. at the annual American Water Resources Association (AWRA) conference this week.
Brett provided an introduction to the subject, including the water supply-demand stresses facing the Western U.S. and the importance of water markets in responding to these challenges. Following his introduction, three case studies were presented:
- Amber Pacheco presented on the efforts of the Rio Grande Water Conservancy District in Colorado
- Brandon Bishop presented on the water right buyout program in Nevada
- Marc Stilson presented on the pilot demand management program run by the Colorado River Authority of Utah
The concept of paying water right holders to not use water is a growing sector of the Western water market and one that WestWater Research continues to support.
