Creativity & Competition: Insights from the WestWater DFW Forum

WestWater Research recently hosted a forum in DFW to discuss emerging dynamics between the public and private sectors as they compete and collaborate for water resources. The event brought together public officials, investors, and industry representatives to discuss ways of collaboration and the future of the industry.

The event was highlighted by a panel featuring Jenna Covington of North Texas Municipal Groundwater District, Dustin Kinder of Maverick Water Group, and Brent Waller of FrontRange H2O, and moderated by Sharlene Leurig of WestWater Research. The discussion highlighted a few key themes:

  • Supply Agility: With rapid changes in water demand from emerging industries like data centers and semiconductor fabs, there is a need for flexible supply. The private sector is primed to fill those gaps in unique ways to protect public resources while meeting industry needs.
  • Groundwater Changes May Be Coming: The upcoming Texas legislative session is creating some of the most dynamic discussions around groundwater management in a generation. How the Legislature may act is unknown, but both public and private entities are paying close attention.
  • Novel Capital Solutions: Innovate private capital solutions offer the opportunity to generate investor returns and tangible positive outcomes for local communities. Outside investment can support critical infrastructure needs, add value to regional populations, and allow public utilities to continue delivering water services.
  • Competition: Water problems are pervasive and while everyone is trying to solve these issues, public and private sector entities can find themselves competing for the same water supply. Navigating this conflict to secure long-term supplies will be partly about timing, and mostly about strategy.

These trends underscore the urgency of effective collaboration between the public and private sectors, and WestWater Research is positioned to support that work at every stage. From strategic supply planning to evaluating capital solutions, WestWater brings the data, expertise, and market perspective needed to navigate a rapidly shifting landscape. As booming populations and growing industry demand compress timelines, having a knowledgeable partner in water resources has never been more valuable.
